The oven has been a fun project. We worked with a group of kids from the garden summer camp plus a few older kid volunteers to mix and build the dome oven. We had found a fresh clay seam onsite and some volunteers dug up enough clean yellow clay to build with. Sand and straw came leftover from another job. The oven has salvaged urbanite base topped with new firebricks. The roof structure is Black Locust from onsite notched and lashed at the top corners. This is an anciant style bread oven where the fire is built directly on the cooking surface and moved out of the way when the oven mass has heated up to about 900 degrees. The heat becomes trapped in the ovens mass and is slowly released, allowing for varying dishes to be cooked as it cools.
